Degenerative Myelopathy – Collie smooth

It is a neuromuscular disease causing a gradual muscle weakness on the hindlimb and back, which is manifested by poor coordination of movements, cramped and asymmetric walking, or incontinence.

The disease affects a wide range of dog breeds (described in more than 100 breeds) and start to develope at middle or upper age. Unfortunately, the disease is untreatable, it is gradually deteriorating, and after 3-5 years from the first manifestation of the disease, a death frequently occurs due to general weakness and paralysis of the respiratory muscles.

Gentle and devoted herding dog with a noble outline and a short, close-fitting coat. Within the family it is affectionate and patient with children, typically reserved with strangers but not sharp. It originates from Scotland and shares roots with the Rough Collie, yet offers easier maintenance. Intelligent and sensitive, it responds best to calm, positive training and enjoys learning tricks and dog sports such as agility and obedience. It needs regular exercise and mental engagement; its watchful nature can make it a bit vocal at times. The short double coat is easy to care for—occasional brushing is enough, with more attention during shedding. Responsible breeding pays attention to health, including eye examinations and sensitivity to certain medications. Well raised, the Smooth Collie is a reliable, active and elegant companion for an active household.
